A New Way to Build BMW Cars

At Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, we know that automakers are trying to adapt and prepare for an evolving auto market. One that's actively preparing for a changing market is the BMW brand. It recently showed off a new concept, but it also has developed a platform that's changing the way it builds cars, no matter how they're powered.

The new BMW concept was the Vision iNext. It attracted a lot of attention at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, and now we know that a production version is on the way. By 2021, a BMW Vision iNext should be on the market as a completely electric luxury SUV. This will be one unique green vehicle, but what could end up attracting even more attention is the platform underpinning it.

Most automakers use platforms to build multiple similar vehicles. This new BMW platform is far more flexible than the typical one though. If BMW engineers are building a typical car, powered by an internal combustion engine, they can use the platform. If they're working on an all-electric car instead, this platform can still be used. If they want to split the difference, they can build a hybrid on the same platform.

This platform prepares the BMW brand for the future, no matter where the auto industry ends up. It seems like green cars are getting more popular, but if demand for conventional vehicles stays high the automaker is ready. If hybrid and electric models become more popular, this platform helps the BMW brand build them as well.
